Build skills for daily life and reduce challenging behaviours

Our behaviour therapy team helps people of all ages with developmental disabilities. Individuals and their caregivers work with a Registered Behaviour Analyst (RBA) to develop meaningful, practical skills and reduce challenging behaviours at home, school, or in their community.

Behaviour therapy services are typically provided using a mediator model approach.

This approach creates positive change by providing training and support to caregivers of people with disabilities (AKA the mediators). This could be a parent, adult family member, educator, or direct service provider. In some instances, the individual may serve as their own mediator. Once goals are established, the Behaviour Therapist works with the mediators throughout the service delivery process.

Who we support

Children, youth, and adults with developmental disabilities and their caregivers

What to expect

Inquire

Once you inquire, we’ll be in touch to start the registration process and connect you with a Behavioural Therapy Specialist.

Assessment

Treatment begins with assessment sessions. During these sessions, we will gather information from you, review medical and other assessment history, and observe a series of assigned tasks or just hold visits during your everyday life. We may try things with your child, youth, or adult and get to know what things they like or dislike.

Once the assessment is completed, your Behavioural Therapist will provide you with written recommendations and support you in implementing those recommendations.

Begin appointments

You’ll schedule appointments, which may take place at your home, in the community, or at one of our locations. Using the mediator model, we will empower you as the caregiver to learn the skills to support your loved one.

Group-based behavioural therapy

If you choose to attend group-based behavioural therapy, you will learn about the basics of behaviour analysis, or about a more specialized topic such as sleep or toileting. Many of our groups are virtual and accessible online. Some groups come with individualized coaching sessions that can help to reinforce skills learned in the group setting.

The requirements for the behaviour therapy program depend on age:

  • 0–6 years: Suspected or confirmed developmental disability
  • 6–18 years: Confirmed intellectual or developmental disability
  • 18 years+: Must be registered with Developmental Services Ontario, Toronto Region
